Programs
• Do not use Freehand for complex layouts with many imported raster images.
• Do not use Photoshop for page design or typesetting.
• Microsoft Publisher, Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Access and Corel Word Perfect are not appropriate for film output. Although we can output these files, we cannot guarantee correct results
• Preferred page layout programs are Quark Xpress or Adobe Pagemaker. Whenever possible, try to use the “Collect for Output” command under the file menu (for Quark users) or the “Save for Service Provider” under the Utilities: Plug-Ins menu (for Pagemaker users). This ensures that all images are included for final output. Pagemaker also includes a folder with all the required fonts.

Fonts
• When using bold and italic attribute buttons, please verify that you have the bold and italic versions of that font.
• Use the outline and shadow attributes at your own risk--not all fonts will image to film with this effect.
• Always include fonts when collecting job to disk for output. Make sure screen fonts as well as corresponding printer fonts are collected.

Colors and Images
• Lineart (black & white, no gray) - Save as Bitmap TIFF
• Grayscale - Save as Grayscale TIFF, or Grayscale EPS
• 4C process - Save as CMYK TIFF, or CMYK EPS
• Monotones, Duotone, Tri-tones, etc. - Save as Photoshop EPS
• Grayscale or 4C process with additional Spot colors -Save as Photoshop DCS 2.0,--Single File, No Composite
• Scanning & DPI
• Lineart should be at least 600dpi (preferred size is 1200dpi)
• Continuous tone images should be at 300dpi for film output
• Make sure images are saved in appropriate format and converted to correct color space (i.e, Grayscale, CMYK, Bitmap)

Hairlines
• Never use hairlines—use a minimum of 3/10 of a point (0.3pt) for every rule, keyline, or stroke.

Linking Files
• Always link, never embed images.
• When using Pagemaker, always use the File: Place command and tell the program NO when asked to store a copy in the publication.

Bleed
• Bleed designs should fall at least 1/8” off the page (.125”) Document size should be at final trim.

Trapping & Imposition
• Do not Trap or Impose files in any way. Please build document in single page, reader’s spreads, first page to last.

Hard Copy Proofs
• Always provide current laser proofs showing correct colors and copy. A mock-up showing backup, folds, and color separations is preferred.
